What is energy star?

The easiest way to find the most energy efficient appliances is to look for the ENERGY STAR label as you shop. Some people think that ENERGY STAR is a brand name, but this is not the case. It is a label developed by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to mark energy efficient products.

ENERGY STAR works with manufacturers to set a standard of energy efficiency for different appliances. When a company manufactures a product that meets these standards of energy efficiency, the product receives an ENERGY STAR label. Sometimes the label is actually on the product; it is almost always printed on the box.

In most cases, ENERGY STAR labeled appliances are not strange looking or more expensive than any other appliances; they are simply more energy efficient. Asking for the ENERGY STAR label when you shop is an easy way to choose appliances that don’t waste energy and don’t cost a lot of money to run.

What kinds of products does ENERGY STAR label?
Most of the products you use everyday in your living space, whether it be a dorm room, an apartment, or a house, are available in an energy efficient, ENERGY STAR labeled model. ENERGY STAR labels almost all products that use energy or influence energy use, such office equipment, commercial food service products, heating and cooling systems, windows and even roofing material.

Lists of ENERGY STAR labeled models, with information on their energy use, can be found at the ENERGY STAR web site.
