Computers are a necessity for college students today. This makes them one of the university’s biggest energy consumers. Yours will be one of at least 6,000 on our uptown campus alone.
If you are purchasing a new computer to take to school, make sure that it bears the ENERGY STAR label. On average, Energy Star qualifying computer equipment is 65% more energy efficient than conventional models.
You can save even more energy by choosing a notebook computer, which uses about 30% of the electricity of a desktop computer while you are working.
Our HP TouchSmart TX2 Tablet was provided by CDW-G. Visit Tulane
Technology Service’s Green IT website for guidance on purchasing Energy Star labeled
computers and a link to Tulane’s Computer Concierge.
Energy Star labeled computers arrive with their power management enabled, which
means that they automatically go into sleep mode when not in use. When you set
up any computer, set the energy saving software to automatically shut off the
monitor when a computer is dormant for 5-10 minutes. Turn off your computer at
night when you are sleeping, so it can rest too. Sleep is good! Don’t forget to look for the ENERGY STAR label if you purchase a printer.
